Lê Hồng Giang — FROM INHERITANCE TO A PATH OF HIS OWN

Student & Son of Chân Như

Lê Hồng Giang is an architect, painter, and ceramic artist, as well as Chân Như’s student and son. For Giang, the story of artistic continuation began in his earliest years, when art was simply a natural part of everyday family life.

Biography

The Journey of Learning

As a child, Giang watched his father design and build architectural works, paint, and create ceramic artworks. But he was not merely an observer. His father encouraged him to try things for himself—to work with his hands, touch the materials, and experience the process of making.

At first, these may have been no more than the ordinary moments of a child beside his father. Over time, however, colour, form, line, material, light, and ways of seeing space gradually became embedded in his consciousness.

There was no formal curriculum through which these lessons were passed down. Some things are learned simply by watching, by working with one’s hands, and by spending years immersed in a life shaped by art.

What Giang received from his father was more than a profession. Above all, it was a way of seeing: to see architecture not only through function but through emotion; to see a painting not only through colour but through the soul; and to see a material not simply for its form, but for the story held within.

This inheritance continued to unfold across different creative disciplines. Architecture gave Giang a sensitivity to space, proportion, structure, and function. Painting taught him to observe the world through colour, line, light, and emotion. Ceramics brought him back to earth, water, minerals, and fire—a realm in which the artist cannot fully control the material, but must learn to listen, to be patient, and to enter into dialogue with nature.

Alongside painting, Giang practises meditation and is currently pursuing his work in ceramics. For him, architecture, painting, and ceramics are different languages for expressing a world experienced from within. What he sees, touches, and experiences does not end with the moment itself. It remains in his consciousness and, over time, evolves into new thoughts, emotions, and ways of seeing.

But continuation does not mean repetition.

From what has been passed down to him, Giang continues to learn, experiment, and search for a language of his own. What he received from his father and teacher has not become a template to reproduce, but rather a collection of seeds—seeds that continue to be nourished by nature, life, and his own experiences.

If Chân Như planted the first seeds of art in Giang, then Giang’s own journey through life is allowing those seeds to grow into forms of their own.

And perhaps this is the deeper meaning of artistic inheritance: not to preserve a form unchanged, but to keep a current alive.

From father to son. From teacher to student. From eyes to hands. From material to artwork. From life to the inner self.

This is the current that Lê Hồng Giang continues to carry forward on his own artistic path.
